Kirkus Reviews announced the finalists Wednesday for the second annual Kirkus Prize in fiction, nonfiction and young readers’ literature, with winners in each category receiving $50,000 – one of the largest literary awards.

This year’s fiction finalists include Lucia Berlin for the acclaimed “A Manual for Cleaning Women” and “Fates and Furies” by Lauren Groff, who’ll be at the Texas Book Festival Oct. 17-18. Nonfiction finalists include Ta-Nehisis Coates, author of “Between the World and Me,” and “H Is for Hawk,” by Helen Macdonald.

This year’s finalists were chosen from titles that earned a Kirkus Star with publication between Nov. 1, 2014 and Oct. 31, 2015. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Austin on Oct. 15.

In addition to Berlin and Groff, the other finalists for fiction are Susan Barker, “The Incarnations”; Valeria Luiselli, “The Story of My Teeth”; Jim Shepard, “The Book of Aron”; and Hanya Yanagihara, “A Little Life.”

Other nonfiction finalists are: John Ferling, “Whirlwind: The American Revolution and the War That Won It”; Adam Tooze, “The Deluge: The Great War, America and the Remaking of the Global Order, 1916-1931”; Simon Winchester, “Pacific: Silicon Chips and Surfboards, Coral Reefs and Atom Bombs, Brutal Dictators, Fading Empires, and the Coming Collision of the World’s Superpowers”; and Andrea Wulf, “The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt’s New World.”

Children’s finalists are split into three categories: Picture Book (Lauren Child for “The New Small Person” and Jonah Winter for “Lillian’s Right to Vote”); Middle Grade (Pam Munoz Ryan for “Echo” and Duncan Tonatiuh for “Funny Bones”); and Teen: Martha Brockenbrough for “The Game of Love and Death” and Daniel Jose Older for “Shadowshaper.”

Austin’s Marc Winkelman is the president and publisher of Kirkus, and the American-Statesman has a partnership with the organization to bring readers select reviews.
