William Giraldi has won the Balcones Fiction Prize for “Hold the Dark,” and Christian Wiman has won the Balcones Poetry Prize for “Once in the West,” Austin Community College has announced.

The prizes, which come with $1,500 each, are unusual in that they’re sponsored by the creative writing department at ACC. They honor the best book published in the previous year.

“Hold the Dark” deals with the death of a child in an isolated Alaskan village and the father’s efforts at finding his missing wife, Medora Slone, who is harboring dark secrets.

Giraldi is the fiction editor for the journal AGNI at Boston University and lives in Boston with his family.

“Once in the West” is the fourth collection of poetry by Christian Wiman, who was born and raised in West Texas and is a former editor of Poetry magazine. He teaches at the Yale Divinity School and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music.
