Hemenway’s ‘Elegy’ wins major prize

Arna B. Hemenway’s “Elegy on Kinderklavier” has won the 2015 PEN/Hemingway Award for debut fiction, which includes a $20,000 prize.

The honor also includes a residency in the Distinguished Visiting Writers Series at the University of Idaho’s MFA program in creative writing, with a $5000 honorarium and a Ucross Residency Fellowship for a month at the writers retreat at the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming.

Hemenway is an assistant professor in the department of English at Baylor University. His book is a collection of short stories and a novella, many involving soldiers who are in Iraq or have served there.
